Lightweight Engineering. Timeless Performance.

With more than 100 years of shipbuilding experience, Oma is a specialist in the design and construction of lightweight, aluminium vessels, guided by a continuous focus on technological development, seaworthiness, low weight, and energy efficiency. Aluminium’s unique combination of strength, fire resistance, damage tolerance, and 100 % recyclability makes it the optimal structural material for fast ferries, delivering superior safety, low environmental impact, high fuel efficiency, and long service life, qualities that also ensure strong demand and lasting value in the second‑hand market.

Oma Baatbyggeri

Oma Baatbyggeri is a family-owned company, with roots dating back to 1909. With nearly seven decades of experience in aluminium construction, Oma has established itself as a leading developer, designer and builder of lightweight, high‑speed aluminium catamarans.

Oma‑engineered fast ferries rank among the most energy‑efficient in the industry, measured in kWh per passenger kilometre. Continuous development driven by a strong focus on weight optimisation, advanced hull design and carefully selected equipment has positioned our vessels at the forefront of low‑energy performance.
Our designs are built around a clear set of priorities: technological innovation, seaworthiness, low weight and reduced fuel consumption. Together these principles ensure vessels that deliver outstanding efficiency, reliability and long‑term operational value.

Oma Slipp & Mekaniske Verksted

Oma Slipp & Mekaniske Verksted was established in 1981 as a subsidiary specialising in the repair and maintenance of vessels up to 50 metres in length.
The yard operates two slipways: an indoor slipway that enables year‑round operations protected from the elements, and an additional outdoor slipway that provides operational flexibility and increased capacity.
Supported by a highly skilled, multidisciplinary workforce the company delivers maintenance, repair, modification and conversion services, with particular expertise in supporting fast ferry operators. A modern and well‑equipped engine workshop commissioned in 2007 allows Oma to offer a full range of services, including maintenance of large diesel engines.

Aluminium is the preferred building material

Why aluminium?

Aluminium is a durable and sustainable material that can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality. Its long lifecycle and low environmental impact make it a material of the future.

Non-combustable

Aluminium is a non‑combustible material, providing an added layer of safety for passengers and crew in the unlikely event of incidents such as an engine‑room fire.

Easy repair

Aluminium offers high strength while remaining easy to repair. Hull and structural damage can be addressed efficiently, minimising downtime.

Low weight and high strength

By combining low weight with high strength, aluminium enables the design of high‑speed catamarans that deliver both reliability and fuel efficiency.

Sustainability is built-in

Sustainable ship design is not an optional extra, it is the only viable approach to building modern vessels. At Oma, sustainability is embedded in every stage of our work, starting with our choice of material.

We build our vessels in aluminium, a material that is both highly durable and supremely recyclable. In fact, approximately 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today. Its exceptional strength‑to‑weight ratio is a key reason our vessels are strong, lightweight and fast, attributes that directly translate into lower energy consumption and improved operational efficiency.

Sustainability is therefore not an add‑on, but an integral part of our designs, from hulls and engine rooms to propulsion systems. The result is vessels that are faster, more efficient and more economical to operate. Even without these tangible advantages we believe it is our responsibility to build ships that respect both the environment and the passengers they serve.

For us, sustainability is not just good business, it is good sense. The green transition is a natural part of how we work every day, as fundamental to our operations as the morning coffee break.
